Listen to Podcast Episode 76: Forgiveness Brings Pure Joy
One of the things I love about my life is I get to choose who I listen to each day. So if you’re getting my podcasts in the morning, that tells you something. First of all, you can know I love you as a friend, and you either love what I send you and want to listen (or you’re my friend and you’re willing to listen to the people I’ve chosen to listen to in the morning).
I’ve chosen three people to listen to who will be the most significant influencers in my life.
- David, king of Israel for 40 years
- His son, Solomon, who was also king of Israel for 40 years
- Finally, Jesus of Nazareth, who claimed to be the king of the universe
I’ve listened to each of their stories and I’m captured by their honesty about life, their humanity, their personal confessions about their own life, their disparity, and their incredible victory entrusting their mind behind the universe.
Just choosing to listen to the directions their lives has led me to joy inexpressible, personal healing, and relationship with friends—particularly my life companion in life, Charlotte. You know, everyone in life longs to have a friend, a friend you can count on, who will be there, who will neither leave you nor forsake you, who will not shift on you.
I shift, you shift, others shift—but there’s one who never shifts.
These three leaders have mentored me on what matters each day, how to discover and practice the habit of choosing to listen and practice their teaching. I invite you to listen to David this morning on how to view the world, how to view yourself, how to view God, and how to view friendship.
Listen now to the heart of David in Psalm 32:2.
Oh, what joy for those
whose disobedience is forgiven,
whose sin is put out of sight!
Yes, what joy for those
whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt,
whose lives are lived in complete honesty!
When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude
Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time,
that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.
For you are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with songs of victory. Interlude
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you.
Do not be like a senseless horse or mule
that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.”
Many sorrows come to the wicked,
but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord.
So rejoice in the Lord and be glad, all you who obey him!
Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure!
Today is a day where you can turn your eyes and focus on a great lover, the God of the universe who sent his only son to remind you, to remind me that at my worst I’m his beloved friend.
You are loved today. I pray you’ll receive that love, walk in that love, and let that love control the direction and pathway of life.
All the best,
Terry Sanford Smith
